Highmark to provide coverage for Teledermatology and Virtual

As of January 1, 2015, Highmark will cover Teledermatology and Virtual Behavioral Health visits for all sizes of group clients under 65 (fully insured and self-insured).* These forms of telemedicine use secure telecommunications technology to allow members to connect remotely with specialists. Please note: It is the provider’s decision to practice medicine in this manner and if it is the right type of care for the patient.

  • Teledermatology visits will be covered in the same way as an in-person visit to a dermatologist, and are not a separate benefit.
  • Virtual Behavioral Health visits will be covered as long as the benefit plan includes outpatient mental health visits. The majority of Highmark medical plans provide this coverage. If a client’s mental health benefits are covered by another carrier, the member should check with their mental health carrier to determine if this would be a covered service.

Finding telemedicine providers: It is noted on the provider’s profile on Highmark’s online Provider Directory if he/she participates in telemedicine programs.

*This coverage does not apply to Medicare Advantage plans or any plan in which Medicare is primary.
